A top-three, late-season, non-conference matchup of two iconic programs delivered one of ESPN’s better college basketball audiences.
Saturday’s Michigan-Duke men’s college basketball game averaged a 2.0 rating and 4.32 million viewers on ESPN, nearly doubling Kentucky-Alabama last year (2.17M) and marking the largest audience for a men’s game on the ESPN networks since Duke-North Carolina in 2019 — Zion Williamson’s much-hyped first game against the Tar Heels (4.34M). It also ranks among the ten most-watched men’s games ever on ESPN (seventh).
(Keep in mind that Nielsen did not begin tracking out-of-home viewing in its estimates until 2020, and did not do so in 100% of markets in the lower 48 states until last February. In addition, Nielsen shifted in September to a new methodology that combines its traditional panel with “Big Data” from smart TVs and set-top boxes. Those changes will generally skew comparisons to past years.)
The rare late season non-conference contest, which peaked with 5.4 million viewers, delivered the third-largest audience of the college basketball season — trailing only the two NFL-adjacent games on Thanksgiving Day, Duke-Arkansas on CBS following Chiefs-Cowboys (6.81M) and Michigan State-North Carolina on FOX following Packers-Lions (6.50M).
Duke has played in three of the four most-watched games this season, with their matchup against North Carolina placing fourth (3.51M).
Duke-Michigan was the day’s second matchup of top five teams, following an Arizona-Houston game on ABC that drew 2.45 million — the broadcast network’s largest college basketball audience since 2002. (Keep in mind ABC has aired only a handful of games over that span.) The Wildcats’ win, which peaked with 3.2 million, delivered the second-largest college basketball audience of the week.
Overall, the ESPN networks aired nine of the ten most-watched games for the week ending Sunday, including each of the top four. Leading out of Michigan-Duke, Auburn-Kentucky placed third with 1.85 million. Going back to the start of last week, Houston-Iowa State placed fourth with 1.65 million on “Big Monday” February 16.
