CBS Sports NFL analyst Tony Romo was arrested on Thursday night on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI), according to a report by the Associated Press.
Per the AP, Romo was driving southbound on I-43 near Milwaukee and was pulled over, after which he performed “poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.” He was taken into custody on suspicion of OWI, booked in the Milwaukee County Jail and released around 11 PM ET, according to an arrest report obtained by Nick Bohr of WISN. The first offense for an OWI charge in Wisconsin is usually considered a civil offense and involves a fine between $150 and $300. Romo is reportedly scheduled to appear in court on Monday, Sept. 21.

Romo has worked for CBS Sports since 2017 as the company’s lead NFL analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and reporter Tracy Wolfson. For a time, he was the highest paid TV analyst, resetting the market with a reported 10-year, $180 million contract, since dwarfed by Tom Brady‘s reported 10-year, $375 million deal with Fox Sports.
Before broadcasting NFL games, Romo played 14 seasons as a QB for the Dallas Cowboys.
It is far from unprecedented for a sports TV broadcaster to be arrested for a DUI or similar offense, a list that perhaps most notably includes Charles Barkley — who was suspended from his role as TNT NBA analyst for several weeks in 2009.
Romo’s reported arrest would be the second for a national NFL analyst in the past year. Former NFL QB Mark Sanchez was arrested on three misdemeanors — “battery with injury, unlawful entry of a motor vehicle and public intoxication” — last October. Fox Sports said in November that Sanchez “is no longer with the network,” and the company added QB Drew Brees to work alongside play-by-play announcer Adam Amin and reporter Kristina Pink.
CBS Sports has not yet revealed its broadcast teams for the 2026 NFL season. The network begins its regular-season slate with a Week 1 doubleheader on Sunday, September 13, including Packers-Vikings in the 4:25 PM ET window.
