Wrapping up the 2012-13 college basketball television ratings, here is a look at the numbers for every major postseason game on national TV (men and women) — including the conference tournaments, the NCAA Tournament, and the NIT. Click here to jump to the chart.
While the college basketball regular season was not much of a television draw, the postseason was a different story. The men’s NCAA Tournament averaged a combined 6.7 rating and 10.7 million viewers across CBS and Turner Sports, with each individual game averaging a 2.8 and approximately 4.4 million.
The Louisville/Michigan title game drew a 14.0 and 23.4 million viewers, ranking as the #2 sporting event of the past year on any network (excludes the NFL and Olympics). Only the Alabama/Notre Dame BCS National Championship Game on ESPN (15.1, 26.4M) drew more viewers.
Overall, the men’s NCAA Tournament accounted for four of the ten highest-rated college sports telecasts of the 2012-13 academic year (click here for chart).
In other postseason action, the Women’s NCAA Tournament suffered due to the early absence of Brittney Griner and Baylor. All three games of the Final Four, including the Connecticut/Louisville title game, had declines compared to last year. Outside of the Final Four, Baylor’s upset loss in the Sweet 16 was the top draw with a 0.9 U.S. rating and 1.5 million viewers.
In the NIT, the top draw was Kentucky’s upset loss to Robert Morris in the first round (1.1, 1.6M). The actual NIT final between Baylor and Iowa drew only a 0.8 and 1.3 million.
