According to the Sports Business Daily, Mobile ESPN is back. This Associated Press article details the deal:
The multiyear agreement giving Verizon Wireless exclusive U.S. rights to offer the Mobile ESPN application on its V Cast phones was expected to be announced on Thursday, executives at both companies said on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been finalized
Mobile ESPN is still dead as a standalone product. This deal only revives the services on Verizon’s V Cast. Still, it’s interesting that ESPN would revive the idea under the same brand name that failed so spectacularly last year.
Verizon expects that the new Mobile ESPN service will increase the amount of subscribers using V Cast.
“Not all people with V Cast-capable handsets use V Cast. We expect ESPN will drive additional adoption.?
Considering the extremely poor performance of Mobile ESPN as a standalone product, expectations should be low. If anything, this gives Trey Wingo more work — and maybe ESPN can dust off that insane character who stalks SportsCenter anchors.
