- Tiger Woods‘ presence gave a major boost to the ratings for The Memorial. Final round coverage of the event drew a 3.2/8 final rating on CBS last Sunday, up 100% from a 1.6/4 for final round coverage last year, up 39% from a 2.3/6 in ’07, and the highest rating for the final round of The Memorial since ’05.
- Roger Federer did not come close to matching Woods’ drawing power last Sunday. Federer’s win in the French Open final — his record-tying 14th Grand Slam victory — drew a 1.5/5 final rating on NBC last Sunday, even with last year’s final, but off 17% from a 1.8 in ’07. Federer’s victory drew less than half of the rating Woods’ victory drew on CBS later that day.
- Ratings for local Major League Baseball telecasts were flat through the first two months of the 2009 season. Through May 24, local MLB telecasts averaged a 3.2 rating, “no different from the same period last season.”
