Kentucky was the bright spot of a slow college basketball weekend on CBS. In other news, FOX concluded its run of Big East games with another poor performance, and overnights for gymnastics’ American Cup were the lowest in more than a decade.
Florida/Kentucky Tops CBS Slate
- The Florida/Kentucky college basketball game drew a 1.8 overnight rating on CBS Saturday, up 39% from Connecticut/Louisville last year (1.3), up 100% from UCLA/Washington in 2013 (0.9), and the weekend’s top such game on broadcast (eight telecasts). The other five CBS games declined — N.C. State/Syracuse (0.9, -31%), Stanford/Arizona (1.0, -17%), Memphis/Cincinnati (0.8, -27%) and Northern Iowa/Illinois State (0.8, -11%) by double-digits, and Wisconsin/Ohio State (1.4) dropped a more modest 7%.
Another Poor Performance As FOX Wraps Big East Sked
- FOX earned a 0.4 overnight rating for both Seton Hall/Georgetown and St. John’s/Villanova on Saturday, the network’s final college basketball telecasts of the season. Six of the eleven Big East telecasts on FOX this season had less than a 0.5 overnight — including a 0.3 for a nonconference game between Butler and Northwestern in December — and 12 of the network’s 13 total telecasts had less than a 0.8.
Overnights For American Cup Gymnastics Lowest Since At Least 2002
- The American Cup gymnastics tournament, which took place from Cowboys Stadium, drew a 0.8 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon — down 27% from last year (1.1), down a tick from 2013 (0.9), and the lowest overnight for the event since at least 2002. This year was the seventh straight in which coverage earned less than a 1.2 overnight.
