ESPN has extended its suspension of MLB analyst Curt Schilling.
In a statement Thursday, ESPN announced that Schilling will not appear on ESPN platforms for the remainder of the MLB regular season or for the network’s Wild Card playoff game. The decision came more than a week after Schilling’s initial suspension for posting an image to Twitter that equated the percentage of extremists in the Muslim community to the percentage of Nazis in Germany during World War II.
It also came the day after Awful Announcing posted e-mail correspondences with Schilling in which he criticized the coverage of his comments. The e-mails also included a derogatory reference he made about ESPN NFL analyst Chris Mortensen. Though the network did not reference the Awful Announcing post, it said Schilling’s “actions have not been consistent with his contractual obligations nor have they been professionally handled” and further, that they have “obviously not reflected well on the company” (ESPN, 9/3).
Schilling has been with ESPN since 2010 and joined the Sunday Night Baseball team last year. He missed most of last season due to a battle with cancer, and now will not complete his second due to the suspension.
