Is Whitlock also wrong about this?:

“At this time, we are our own worst enemies. We have allowed our youths to buy into a culture (hip hop) that has been perverted, corrupted and overtaken by prison culture.

The music, attitude and behavior expressed in this culture is anti-black, anti-education, demeaning, self-destructive, pro-drug dealing and violent.”

Or this?

Whitlock is 100% right. What Imus said was racist and idiotic, but so far Whitlock has been one of the very few to step up to the plate and have the guts to say what REALLY threatens the black community.

And it isn’t Don Imus.

I think Whitlock is absolutely right. Rappers get away with saying “hos”, “bitches”, the N-word, anything and the media glorifies them for teens. But an old white guy makes an off-colour comment and everyone wants him executed.

Glad there is at least 1 black journalist who sees the hypocrisy in it, and a sports one at that. Unlike Mike Wilbon, who just calls everyone a bigot while defending blacks who make similar comments because of course its “just a joke” when they say it or Stuart Scott, who thinks that when rappers say hos they do it affectionately. Give me a break.

You know, I’ve been thinking there is legitimacy to turning our attention to misogynistic lyrics. At the same time, there’s something disturbing about taking the racist-sexist words of a white male and using them to criticize black people. “Look at this awful thing this white guy said…and you know what else is awful? Things black guys are saying!” It seems like a twisted shift in focus.

It’s worthy of attention, though I think it’s getting attention for (at the very least) awkward reasons.
