NBC has tapped Bob Costas for next week’s Hockeyville USA NHL preseason game. In other news, Fox Sports has hired former ESPN analyst Steve Lavin, and Padres voice Dick Enberg is stepping down after next year.
Costas to Host NHL’s Hockeyville USA Game
- NBC Sports broadcaster Bob Costas will co-host coverage of Tuesday’s Lightning/Penguins NHL preseason game on NBCSN, it was announced Monday. Part of the NHL’s new Hockeyville USA program, the game will take place from Cambria County War Memorial Arena in Johnstown, PA — the same arena in which Costas began his career in 1973. Costas, who has previously hosted NHL Winter Classic coverage on NBC, will work alongside Liam McHugh and Mike Milbury. (NBC Sports Group Press Box)
Fmr. ESPN Analyst Lavin Joins Fox Sports
- Fox Sports has hired former ESPN college basketball analyst Steve Lavin to serve in the same capacity starting this season. Lavin, who was fired as head coach of the St. John’s men’s basketball team after last season, will work as a studio analyst on FOX and Fox Sports 1 and will also work from the booth on select games. Enberg Leaving Padres After Next Year
- San Diego Padres play-by-play voice Dick Enberg announced Wednesday that he will step down from the position at the end of next season. Enberg, who left national broadcasting gigs with CBS and ESPN to join the Padres in 2010, said in a statement that he expects to have a “continuing role” with the team.
