Capping a resurgent season for the PGA Tour, Jordan Spieth‘s FedEx Cup clinching win delivered a three-year high in the overnights Sunday.
Final round coverage of The Tour Championship, the final event in the PGA Tour FedEx Cup, earned a 1.9 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon — up 12% from last year (1.7), up 19% from 2013 (1.6) and the event’s highest final round overnight since 2012 (2.2).
Spieth’s win, which clinched the FedEx Cup, was the 20th of the past 28 final round telecasts to have an increase in overnight ratings and the 14th to hit a multi-year high.
Despite the increase, the 1.9 overnight ranks as the sixth-lowest final round overnight this season. Keep in mind the telecast was just the second of the season to face NFL competition.
Third round action on Saturday drew a 1.3 overnight — down 28% from last year (1.8) and down a tick from 2013 (1.4). The telecast aired in a special early timeslot to accommodate NBC’s Notre Dame coverage, while last year’s telecast aired in the usual 3-6 PM ET window.
