Barber, a former and prominent player in the National Football League, gets his first opportunity to report on a hard news story — one that might very well become one of the most important and remembered of the decade.
The question becomes whether or not Barber can contribute any useful insight into the tragedy. He be on in a ‘sports’ capacity (and sports is used very loosely here), talking with those involved in athletics at Virginia Tech, or he could be used in a correspondent’s role, augmenting the observations and contributions from hosts Lauer and Vieira. Either way, tomorrow is the first test in Barber’s journalistic career, and his performance could indicate whether journalism is a hobby or a job for the former football star.
