The conclusion of Olympic golf posted strong numbers on NBC and Golf Channel.
Final round coverage of the Olympic men’s golf tournament earned a 6.3 overnight rating during the 90-minute window in which coverage was simulcast on NBC and Golf Channel, the second-highest figure for any 90-minute period of golf this year. Keep in mind NBC’s coverage aired on a three-hour delay in the Mountain and Pacific time zones.
Overnights for the full final round, which ran from 6 AM-3 PM on Golf Channel, were not immediately available.
Later in the day, final round coverage of the PGA Tour John Deere Classic earned a 0.8 overnight rating on CBS — down 71% from last year, when Jordan Spieth‘s win delivered the tournament’s highest overnight since 1999 (2.8). The 0.8 also declined a third from 2012 (1.2) to rank as the tournament’s lowest final round overnight since at least 2003.
Third round coverage the previous day earned a 0.5 overnight, down 67% from last year (1.5) and down 50% from 2014 (1.0). The steep declines are no surprise given the tournament was overshadowed by Olympic golf — and the Games generally — and boasted a weaker field than usual.
