The Huskies’ domination of women’s college basketball may or may not be good for the game, but for at least one night, it was good for the ratings.
Monday’s South Carolina/Connecticut women’s college basketball game scored 1.2 million viewers on ESPN2, the largest audience for a regular season women’s game since Connecticut/Stanford in December 2010 — which snapped the Huskies’ then-record 90-game winning streak. Ratings were not immediately available.
The Huskies’ 100th-straight win, coverage of which started 45 minutes late after an earlier game ran long, ranked third out of Monday’s six nationally televised basketball games. It trailed both Big Monday men’s games on ESPN, but topped both games of an NBA doubleheader on TNT.
For the season, it was the second-most watched college basketball game — regardless of gender — on ESPN2. Last month’s Baylor/Kansas men’s game hold the top spot with 1.3 million.
Hartford led all markets Monday night with a 14.3 rating. Greenville SC was a very distant second with a 2.3, with Knoxville TN (2.0), Charlotte (1.7) and Cincinnati (1.6) rounding out the top five.
