NASCAR got back on schedule Sunday, but it did not get back on track.
NASCAR Cup Series racing from Richmond (Va.) earned a 2.7 overnight rating on FOX Sunday afternoon, down 7% from last year (2.9) and down 13% from 2015 (3.1). The 2015 race also aired on a Sunday afternoon, but as a make-up race after a Saturday night rainout.
The 2.7 overnight is the lowest for the race since it moved to FOX a decade ago. It is also the second-lowest ever for a Sunday Cup Series race on FOX, ahead of only Texas three weeks earlier (2.5).
Not including Las Vegas in March, overnights for which were never publicly released due to a lengthy Nielsen delay, overnights have now declined for six of eight Cup Series races this year. All eight races have declined from 2015.
Head-to-head, NASCAR trailed both NBA playoff games on ABC, Jazz-Clippers (4.2) and Wizards-Celtics (3.2). The race could still finish ahead of the latter game when final numbers are released Tuesday.
