Contrary to perceptions of an ESPN ratings slide, the network’s viewership increased in 2017. In other news, ESPN’s college football bowl viewership increased this season, while CBS posted its smallest Sun Bowl audience in at least a decade.

Wrapping up the pre-New Year’s bowls, Friday’s Northwestern-Kentucky Music City Bowl scored 4.6 million, down 8% from last year (Tennessee-Nebraska: 5.0M*), down 15% from two years ago (Louisville-Texas A&M: 5.4M*) and the game’s smallest audience since 2013. Despite the low, it posted the third-largest audience of the bowl season outside of the New Year’s Six.
Earlier in the day, the Wake Forest-Texas A&M Belk Bowl drew 3.0 million — down 40% from last year (VT-Arkansas: 5.0M*), down 16% from two years ago (Mississippi State-N.C. State: 3.5M*), and that game’s smallest audience since 2010 (USF-Clemson: 2.9M).
On Saturday, the Mississippi State-Louisville Gator Bowl had 4.4 million on ESPN (+67%) and the Iowa State-Memphis Liberty Bowl had 3.4 million* on ABC (+10%). [ESPN, ShowBuzz Daily 1.2, 1.3]
