Tiger Woods‘ second straight victory in the PGA Championship drew a 6.2/14 final rating on CBS, down 11% from a 7.0 last year. While the 6.2 is “the seventh-highest rating for the final round since ’86“, it is also the third lowest rating ever for a Woods major championship victory.
To put the rating in perspective, the 6.2 is off 3% from the 6.4 for the final round of the U.S. Open, and down 32% from the 9.1 rating for The Masters in April. The rating is also lower than three of the four games of the record-low setting NBA Finals in June.
Third round coverage was also down, by a fairly sizable margin; the 4.2/11 for Saturday coverage was off 14% from a 4.9 in 2006. Among metered markets, Florida took the top three spots; the Ft. Myers-Naples, West Palm Beach and Orlando-Daytona Beach-Melbourne markets averaged final round ratings of 11.1, 10.1 and 9.5, respectively.
