One night after earning the lowest Game 4 overnight in history, the 2011 World Series set another record low for Game 5.
The Rangers’ Game 5 victory over the Cardinals earned a 10.0 overnight rating on FOX Monday night, down 6% from last year (SF/TEX G5: 10.6), and down 22% from 2009 (NYY/PHI G5: 12.8).
Of note, last year’s Game 5 was the series-clincher.
The 10.0 overnight is the lowest ever for Game 5 of the World Series. The previous low was last year’s 10.6.
It was not immediately known whether the World Series defeated the NFL for the second straight night. Overnights for Monday’s Jaguars/Ravens NFL game on ESPN were not immediately available, as a Nielsen coding error has resulted in potentially inaccurate numbers for ESPN and ESPN2 programs between Saturday and Monday.
Of note, final ratings for the first four games of the 2011 World Series have declined only between 9% and 11% from the overnight. Last year, final ratings for the five World Series games declined between 12% and 17% from the overnight.
In other words, while last year’s Game 5 dropped from a 10.6 to an 8.8 when the final numbers were released, this year’s game could finish in the 8.9 to 9.1 range.
