Considering the popularity of the product, there may be no such thing as excess. Still, 52 NFL preseason games seems to be a little much, even for the NFL Network.
The slate of preseason match-ups includes a sextuple-header on September 1 and the Hall of Fame Game twenty days from now on August 5. Only two the 52 televised games will be produced by NFL Network (the Hall of Fame Game and Washington/Titans on August 11), with Bryant Gumbel and Cris Collinsworth in the booth.
The other games will use local announcers in a somewhat unique arrangement; NFL Network will use “the television feeds of local broadcasters and [make] use of both sets of announcers. For example, if Houston is playing at Arizona, NFL Network will use the announcers from the Cardinals (home team) for the first half, and then switch to the Texans’ (away team) crew for the second half.”
