In the tradition of Hank Williams Jr. and The Pussycat Dolls.

Nearly every sport ESPN owns the rights to has a ‘catchy’ theme song by some popular music group, in an effort by the network to attract casual fans who would not ordinarily tune into a sporting event. The NBA has had Robert Randolph and the Family Band, LL Cool J, Justin Timberlake, The Black Eyed Peas, Destiny’s Child, Rob Thomas, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, and The Pussycat Dolls. The NFL has Hank Williams Jr. NASCAR has Aerosmith.

Now, its college football’s turn. Starting this season, 50 Cent, Kelly Rowland and Perry Farrell will perform the Satellite Party song “Only Love, Let’s Celebrate” before college football games presented on ABC.

Farrell (pictured), lead vocalist of Satellite Party, spoke to MTV News:

“I wanted to bring rock and roll songs into the nightclubs because DJs are always looking for new material, and hip-hop has predominately been what club music has been about over the last 10 years. So when I heard that ESPN was interested in that and they also wanted to get a rapper, they made a wise choice. Their ears were tuning in to the things that I was hoping for. And when they told me they were thinking about 50 on it? Wow, that could be amazing. … It’s pertinent to football, but it could very much be its own thing … I just look forward to rocking people on Saturday nights for the whole football season.”

Whether or not college football fans will “rocking” to a five minute delay in their gridiron experience is debatable. But the presence of 50 Cent should at the very least appeal to the demographic of those watching — as opposed to Rob Thomas, Tom Petty or The Pussycat Dolls.
