After two years of widely panned play-by-play, Bryant Gumbel is leaving the NFL Network.
Gumbel had been working play-by-play for Thursday and Saturday night football games on NFL Network since the latter began televising live games in 2006. During that time, he was criticized for seeming not to know what he was talking about and often sounding unenthusiastic.
NFL Network will begin a search for Gumbel’s replacement immediately. Possible candidates include Tom Hammond of NBC Sports, who filled in for Gumbel on an NFL Network telecast last season.
In a statement, Gumbel said “we’ve agreed that we’d all be better served going in different directions. There are a lot of talented people at NFL Network. I thank them, I wish them well and I have no doubt that they will be very successful going forward.”
