Overnight ratings for sporting events on broadcast.
Ratings for events on FOX unavailable.
Basketball.
12.1: NBA on ABC, Celtics/Lakers (9 PM Sunday)
3.0: NBA Countdown on ABC (8:30 PM Sunday)
0.5: WNBA on ABC, Shock/Mercury (3 PM Saturday)
- On a weekend that featured Tiger Woods in one of the great U.S. Opens of all time, it was the NBA that came out on top in the ratings. Game 5 of the NBA Finals drew a 12.1 overnight on ABC Sunday, the highest overnight for an NBA game since 2005. The 12.1 marked a 16% increase over the 10.2 for the last Game 5 in the NBA Finals, Mavericks/Heat in 2006.
- While the WNBA got off to a relatively decent start in the ratings, it cannot be encouraging that a rematch of one of the better Finals in league history could only draw a 0.5 rating.
Golf.
8.5/15: PGA on NBC, U.S. Open, Final Round (3 PM Sunday)
5.3/12: PGA on NBC, U.S. Open, Third Round (4 PM Saturday)
2.4/7: PGA on NBC, U.S. Open, Second Round (3 PM Friday)
2.4/6: Golf Digest U.S. Open Challenge on NBC (2 PM Sunday)
- A move into prime time gave the U.S. Open great numbers over the weekend, but the ratings could not match previous victories by Tiger Woods in the tournament. The 8.5 final round overnight fell behind an 8.8 in 2000 and a 9.3 in 2002, both Woods victories.
- From 8:00-10:30 PM Saturday night, NBC drew a 5.9 overnight for U.S. Open coverage. The 5.9 is the best for any Saturday night program on broadcast since the Final Four in April. Overall, NBC drew a 5.3 overnight for Saturday U.S. Open coverage.
