The United States/Mexico soccer friendly was a much bigger draw on Univision than on ESPN2.
Wednesday’s match between the United States and Mexico earned 4.485 million viewers on Univision. The match ranked as the night’s top program on broadcast among adults 18-34, men 18-34 and men 18-49.
ESPN2 also televised the match, earning 1.084 million viewers. Keep in mind Univision is a broadcast network, while ESPN2 is on cable.
The large disparity between the Spanish-language and English-language networks is nothing new. The Mexico/United States Gold Cup final earned nearly eight million viewers on Univision, and just over one million on Fox Soccer.
The combined audience for Wednesday’s match equals nearly 5.6 million viewers. Of note, the Univision and ESPN2 telecasts did not begin at the same time; the ESPN2 telecast was delayed for over a half-hour due to Little League coverage.
