ESPN may be planning another reunion of former SportsCenter anchors.
Awful Announcing reported Wednesday that ESPN and NBC Sports have engaged in discussions to let Dan Patrick make a one-time return to SportsCenter. Patrick, who left ESPN in 2007, currently works for NBC as an anchor for Football Night in America and the Olympics.
Patrick’s possible return is part of a larger — but still very early — effort by ESPN to bring back former anchors. “[I]t goes well beyond just Dan,” ESPN spokesman Josh Krulewitz told Awful Announcing. “We’ve done this before where a series of past anchors host a SportsCenter. It’s an idea we are potentially considering again, though it’s very early in the process and it may or may not happen.”
ESPN had a reunion week in 2004 to commemorate the network’s 25-year anniversary. That year, anchors Charley Steiner, Greg Gumbel, Gayle Gardner, George Grande and even Craig Kilborn returned to the network to host alongside Bob Ley, Chris Berman, Stuart Scott and Patrick. ESPN very publicly lost Keith Olbermann‘s invitation in the mail, so to speak.
Olbermann, now an ESPN employee, would be a possible co-host if Patrick returns for an episode.
