A blowout sank overnight ratings for Game 1 of the World Series.
Game 1 of the Giants/Royals World Series drew an 8.0 overnight rating on FOX Tuesday night, down 15% from Cardinals/Red Sox Game 1 last year (9.4) and down 9% from Tigers/Giants Game 1 in 2012 (8.8). The 8.0 overnight is the lowest ever for a Game 1 of the World Series, falling below the previous mark of 8.6 for Cardinals/Tigers in 2006.
The 8.0 is also the lowest ever for a non-Saturday World Series game, and the fifth-lowest for the World Series on any night of the week.
The Giants won Game 1 in an uncompetitive blowout. During the final quarter-hour, with the Giants up 7-1, the game earned a mere 6.3 overnight — down a third from a peak rating of 9.4 from 9:00-9:30 PM ET.
Keep in mind Kansas City is the nation’s #31 television market, possibly the lowest rank ever for any World Series team.
