Viewership for the Gator Bowl was the highest since the game left broadcast television six years ago.
Saturday’s Georgia/Penn State Gator Bowl earned 5.9 million viewers on ESPN, up 43% from Tennessee/Iowa last year (4.1M) and up 30% from Nebraska/Georgia in 2014, which aired on ESPN2 New Year’s Day (4.5M). Ratings were not immediately available.
The Bulldogs’ win ranks as the most-watched Gator Bowl since Florida State/West Virginia on CBS in 2010 (6.4M). That game, which marked the end of Bobby Bowden‘s coaching career, was the last Gator Bowl to air on a broadcast network.
The Gator Bowl was the third of ESPN’s four games on Saturday to post a significant increase in viewership, with the Alamo Bowl up 32% and the Liberty Bowl up a whopping 113%.
