An upset of the nation’s #2 team was overshadowed in the ratings by the Chicago Cubs.
Ohio State/Penn State had a 4.2 overnight rating on the latest edition of ABC’s Saturday Night Football, up 27% from Ohio State/Rutgers last year (3.3) and down 51% from Notre Dame/Florida State in 2014 (8.5).
The Buckeyes’ upset loss, which peaked at a 5.8 from 11:30-11:45 PM ET, earned the second-best college football overnight of the weekend. Alabama/Texas A&M was the top draw with a 5.4 on CBS. The game would likely have done better if not for tough head-to-head competition from the Dodgers/Cubs MLB playoff game on Fox Sports 1, which was the day’s top sporting event at a 6.3.
Earlier in the day, N.C. State/Louisville had a mere 1.9 in the Noon ET window, down a tick from Clemson/Miami last year (2.0). Regional action had a 1.7 in the midday window, down 47% from last year (3.2) and down 37% from 2014 (2.7).
The afternoon windows earned the two lowest overnights for college football on ABC this season.
