SI Lays Off Five
- Sports Illustrated laid off five staffers on Wednesday, according to The Big Lead, with longtime college basketball writer Seth Davis among the cuts. Other names, said to be “recognizable to readers,” were not known as of early Thursday morning. The SI cuts come in the wake of ESPN’s massive layoffs of talent last month. (The Big Lead 5.12)
ESPN Extends Billups
- ESPN has reached a multi-year contract extension with NBA analyst Chauncey Billups, who will continue in his current role on ESPN/ABC’s NBA studio team. Billups has been with the network since 2014. Since ESPN began its layoffs of talent last month, the company has announced extensions with nearly a dozen talent staffers. (ESPN Media Zone 5.12)
Fox Hires Former Germany World Cup Captain
- Former Germany national team captain Lothar Matthäus has joined Fox Sports as an analyst for this summer’s Confederations Cup, it was announced Wednesday. Matthäus has worked for a number of television outlets around the globe, serving last year as a Euro 2016 analyst for ITV in Britain. He debuts June 19, two days into the tournament.
