The MLB All-Star Game eked out a rare increase in overnight ratings, but the numbers were still quite low.
The MLB All-Star Game pulled a 6.5 overnight rating on FOX Tuesday night, up a tick from last year (6.4) but down 17% from 2015 (7.8). The 6.5 is the second-lowest ever for the “Midsummer Classic,” ahead of only last year.
Including coverage on Fox Deportes, the game had a 6.6 overnight — still the second-lowest ever for the All-Star Game.
Despite the historically low numbers, MLB continues to dominate the other pro sports all-star games. No NBA All-Star Game has had as high an overnight since 2002 (9.8), and the Pro Bowl has not had as high a number since 2014 (6.7).
Kansas City was the top market with a 16.6 rating, down 12% from last year (18.8) and down 47% from the massive 31.4 it earned in the Royals’ title-defense year of 2015. St. Louis ranked second at a 12.1, up 16% from last year (10.4) but down 32% from ’15 (17.9).
Cleveland ranked third at an 11.9 (+40%), with Minneapolis (9.6) and New York City (9.2) rounding out the top five. In New York, ratings increased 31% from last year (7.0) and 12% from 2015 (8.2). It was the highest rated All-Star Game in the market since Yankees SS Derek Jeter‘s farewell appearance in 2014 (11.9).
Host market Miami-Ft. Lauderdale had just a 5.6, down 43% from a 9.8 in San Diego last year and down 75% from a 22.6 in Cincinnati two years ago.
