A pair of entertaining college football games were no match for last year’s Sunday night matchup.
Sunday’s West Virginia-Virginia Tech college football game delivered a 2.9 overnight rating on ABC, down 59% from Notre Dame-Texas last year (7.0) and the network’s lowest primetime overnight on the opening weekend of the season since LSU-North Carolina in 2010 (2.8).
The Hokies’ win faced direct competition from another college football matchup, UCLA-Texas A&M on FOX. That game, which saw the Bruins come back from a 34-point deficit, had a 2.2 overnight. There was no comparable window last year.
The games combined for an overnight of approximately 5.1 — still down more than a quarter from Notre Dame-Texas last year.
