As has been expected for months, Chris Fowler has been named the new lead voice of ESPN college football coverage.
Fowler has agreed to a contract extension with ESPN through 2023 that will make him the lead play-by-play voice for college football coverage on the network. Under the agreement, he will team with Kirk Herbstreit on ABC’s “Saturday Night Football” and the new college football playoff, including the championship game.
Former lead ESPN voice Brent Musburger will call games for SEC Network next year, the network announced yesterday.
Fowler will continue to host “College Gameday” and ESPN tennis coverage. There was some thought that if Fowler moved to play-by-play duty, Rece Davis would replace him as “Gameday” host.
Thursday’s news had been expected for months. With Musburger, Fowler and Rece Davis each reaching the end of their contracts with ESPN, the network was going to have to make some changes in order to avoid losing the popular broadcasters.
Whether ESPN has any moves up its sleeve for Davis remains to be seen.
