Update 9/25/22: Commercials from the infamous “Dan and Dave” Reebok ad series leading into the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. At the time this was posted, Nike was running the Kobe and LeBron “puppet” ads in anticipation of an NBA Finals matchup that never materialized. James and the Cavaliers were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals in 2009 and the semifinals the following year, and once LeBron moved to Miami with the Heat, Bryant’s Lakers began to fade.
An irony of this post is that when the “Dan and Dave” comparisons were being made, the expectation by this writer was that the Lakers would fall to the Denver Nuggets, or even potentially the Houston Rockets — not that the Cavaliers would lose to the unheralded Orlando Magic.
