TNT has greenlit a race-focused series starring NBA analyst Charles Barkley.
Barkley will headline a six-episode series titled The Race Card in which the longtime broadcaster will set out “on a personal journey to understand why the country is so divided” (Deadline, 7/31). The show is set to debut early next year.
In his nearly two-decade tenure with Turner Sports, Barkley has often branched away from basketball analysis. Early in his broadcasting career, he hosted a short-lived pre-game talk show called Listen Up! in which he opined on numerous topics. He has also made several appearances on CNN, discussing topics ranging from gay marriage to protests.
Barkley’s political stances have varied over the years. He has called himself a Republican and a Democrat, spoken of running for governor of Alabama and in recent years has been outspoken about hot-button issues that sports analysts typically avoid.
