Red Sox-Yankees ratings soared on ESPN Wednesday night; Tiger Woods lifted the Tour Championship to its best start in years; Thursday college football sank on ESPN; F1 scored an increase last week, with a caveat.
ESPN’s Red Sox-Yankees Ratings Up Big
Wednesday’s Red Sox-Yankees Major League Baseball game scored a 0.7 rating and 1.04 million viewers on ESPN, up 89% in ratings and 92% in viewership from last year (Red Sox-Orioles: 0.38, 543K) and the most-watched non-exclusive game on any network all season.
The Rockies-Dodgers nightcap had a 0.6 and 822,000, up 71% in both measures from last year (Indians-Angels: 0.34, 482K).
On Thursday, another Red Sox-Yankees matchup delivered 424,000 viewers on MLB Network (+16%).
Tiger Lifts Tour Championship to Best Start in Years
Thursday’s first round of The Tour Championship, the final PGA Tour event of the season, earned 751,000 viewers on Golf Channel — up 26% from last year (595K), up 54% from 2016 (488K) and the most-watched opening round of the tournament since at least 2012.
Regardless of round, it was the tournament’s largest cable audience since 2015, when second round coverage pulled 867,000.
Tiger Woods, who is playing the event for the first time since 2013, ended Thursday’s play in a tie for the lead.
Tulsa-Temple Down Double-Digits
Thursday’s Tulsa-Temple college football game drew a 0.48 rating and 728,000 viewers on ESPN, down 26% in ratings and 27% in viewership from last year (Temple-USF: 0.65, 992K) and down 56% and 60% respectively from 2016 (Clemson-Georgia Tech: 1.1, 1.81M). It had a lower rating and fewer viewers than Boston College-Wake Forest the previous week (0.6, 863K), which aired in an early 5:30 PM ET timeslot due to Hurricane Florence.
F1 Singapore GP Up, With Caveat
Last Sunday’s Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix earned a 0.32 rating and 469,000 viewers on ESPN2, up 14% in ratings and 4% in viewership from last year on NBCSN (0.28, 450K). Keep in mind last year’s include a half-hour of prerace coverage.
