The burgeoning rivalry between Texas A&M and Alabama was a dud on the field and in the ratings over the weekend.
The Texas A&M/Alabama college football game drew a 2.8 overnight rating on CBS Saturday afternoon, down 38% from Auburn/Texas A&M last year (4.5) and down 15% from Florida/South Carolina in 2012 (3.3). The 2.8 is tied as the second-lowest overnight of the season for the SEC on CBS, ahead of a Noon ET Georgia/Missouri game the previous week (2.1).
The 2.8 is well below the previous meetings between Alabama and Texas A&M. In 2012, the Aggies’ upset victory drew a 6.6 overnight rating. The much-hyped 2013 rematch soared even higher to a 9.0. This year’s game lacked the drama of the previous two, as Alabama cruised to a 59-0 victory.
For the week, Texas A&M/Alabama ranked a very distant second behind ABC’s Notre Dame/Florida State game (8.5). Head-to-head, the telecast topped ABC’s regional window (2.7) and Michigan State/Indiana on ESPN (1.4).
