Less than one year after Chris Fowler ascended to ESPN’s top college football broadcast team, he has been replaced on the network’s weekly studio show.
James Andrew Miller, author of the ESPN book Those Guys Have All the Fun, reported Thursday via Twitter that Rece Davis will replace Fowler as the host of College Gameday next season. Fowler has hosted the show since 1990.
The decision is not exactly a surprise. When Fowler was named ESPN’s lead college football voice last year, it was with the understanding that his role on College Gameday would be evaluated after the season. Evidently, ESPN and/or Fowler decided against having him balance studio and play-by-play work next year.
The move would seem to bring to an end any speculation about Davis’ future. His contract expires later this year, and there was some thought that he might leave for another network.
