ESPN reporter Stephen A. Smith did not mince words in a passionate phone interview with SportsCenter anchor Chris McKendry.
When prodded by McKendry on whether or not race has to do with the hatred of Barry Bonds, Smith responded “Oh, absolutely”. Smith explained that while “nobody is stupid enough” to think Bonds is not guilty of “something”, it appears fishy that the investigation into Balco occurred after Mark McGwire was out of baseball.
Smith also explained that many of the athletes he speaks to believe that Bonds is the object of a witchhunt. Paraphrasing Smith, Bonds is just one of the many products of Major League Baseball’s steroid era, and yet the only one facing such incredible scrutiny.
