ESPN has promoted one of its rising star executives. In other news, an active WNBA player will co-host the African edition of SportsCenter, and Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy is again battling cancer.
ESPN Promotes Exec
- ESPN has promoted executive Connor Schell to Executive Vice President/Content, which will see his role expand to overseeing all of ESPN’s content creation, it was announced Friday. Schell had been serving as Senior Vice President and Executive Producer of Original Content, overseeing ESPN Films and co-creating the 30 For 30 franchise. He was also in charge of the network’s opinion and NBA shows. [ESPN PR 6.12]
WNBA Player to Co-Host African SportsCenter
- WNBA Sun PF Chiney Ogwumike has joined ESPN as co-host of the African edition of SportsCenter, it was announced this week. Ogwumike will work alongside Phil Murphy on the show, which is distributed to 19 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Ogwumike, the rare active athlete to have a regular role on ESPN, is sitting out the WNBA season due to injury. [ESPN PR 6.14]
Remy Battling Cancer Again
- NESN Red Sox analyst Jerry Remy announced this week that he is again battling lung cancer and will have surgery later this month. Remy says the cancer, which he has battled on multiple occasions over the past decade, “has not spread” and that the surgery “will remove it.” [L.A. Times 6.12]
