Entering the Women's Final Four, the NCAA women's basketball tournament was averaging 931,000 viewers per game across the ESPN family of networks -- down 4% from last year (967K) and 34% from the record-setting pace two years ago (1.4M). On a day of March Madness matinees, the NBA's new media rights deal allowed it to capitalize on an unopposed primetime window.

Last weekend's Knicks-Thunder NBA "Sunday Night Basketball" game on NBC averaged a combined 3.4 million viewers across Nielsen (1.6, 3.07M) and Adobe Analytics, marking the largest NBA audience during March Madness in a decade -- since Warriors-Spurs on ABC in 2016 (5.2M).

The debut of Major League Baseball on Netflix set an MLB Opening Night viewership mark, albeit one that lasted about 24 hours.

Last Wednesday's Yankees-Giants Major League Baseball Opening Night game averaged a 1.3 rating and 2.97 million viewers on Netflix, which at the time marked the largest audience for an Opening Night or Opening Day game since the COVID-shortened 2020 season (Yankees-Nationals: 4.01M) and the largest outside of that anomalous circumstance since 2017 (Cubs-Cardinals: 3.62M).

If extraordinary on the court, UConn's classic win over Duke was a pretty average television draw in its highly-rated window.

Sunday's UConn-Duke NCAA men's basketball tournament regional final averaged 13.4 million viewers on CBS, up 15% from Michigan State-Auburn last year (11.7M) and the third-largest audience for any individual game prior to the Final Four since the tournament returned from hiatus in 2021.

NCAA Women’s Tournament
Mar 20–23, 2026 · ESPN, ABC

The NCAA women’s basketball tournament was averaging 628,000 viewers through the first two rounds, up 4% from last year (602K) and behind the Caitlin Clark-fueled levels of 2024 as the highest average since 2009. Note that the 4% increase is well within the margin that can be explained entirely by Nielsen’s shift to “Big Data + Panel” methodology.

Second round games last Sunday and Monday averaged 1.0 million (+3%).

Mar 21–22, 2026 · FOX, CW

Last Sunday’s NASCAR Cup Series race from Darlington (S.C.) averaged a 1.3 rating and 2.43 million viewers on FS1, up a tick in ratings but down 1% in viewership from Homestead-Miami on the same weekend last year (1.2, 2.46M).

Compared to last year’s first Darlington race, which took place one week later in the calendar, ratings were flat and viewership inched up from 2.42 million. (That is in the margin that would usually be explained by Nielsen methodological changes, but note that NASCAR rarely gets any lift from the new “Big Data + Panel” methodology.)

Tyler Reddick’s win, his fourth in the first six races this season, peaked with 3.0 million viewers in the 6 PM ET quarter-hour.

The corresponding Xfinity Series race drew a 0.65 and 1.18 million on CW the previous day, up from both last year at Homestead (0.56, 1.16M) and last year at Darlington (0.57, 1.01M).

Last week's record-setting World Baseball Classic was just the latest viewership hit for Major League Baseball, coming off of the two most-watched World Series since 2017. And as is often the case any time any league anywhere has a ratings success, much of the conversation concerned … the NBA.

For an event as consistently strong as March Madness, viewership simply rising in line with Nielsen's methodological changes -- or even slightly behind that pace -- equals a slew of new records.

Through Sunday's second round, the NCAA men's basketball tournament was averaging a combined 10.1 million viewers per window across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV -- the highest average on record at this point of the event and an increase of 7% over last year.

The NCAA men's basketball tournament opened at a viewership high -- again.

Thursday's opening round coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament averaged a combined 9.8 million viewers per window across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV -- up 6% from last year (9.1M) and the largest audience on record for the opening day of play. Between this year and last, Nielsen shifted to a new methodology that combines "Big Data" from smart TVs and set-top boxes with its traditional panel, generally boosting viewership.

The NBC family of networks averaged 1.1 million viewers for the recently-concluded Milan-Cortina Winter Paralympics, per a combination of Nielsen and Adobe Analytics — up 24% from the previous edition in Beijing four years ago. That is outside the range that would be explained by Nielsen methodological changes.

The most-watched telecast was the March 7 primetime window on NBC that averaged 1.4 million, a record for the event (with the caveat that it was only the second-ever Winter Paralympics window on primetime broadcast television).

Saturday night was not all right for NBA games this season, but the league's expanded Sunday slate has helped make up the difference.

ABC averaged 2.22 million viewers for its seven "NBA Saturday Primetime" games this season, down 21% from last year (2.82M) and the least-watched season of the series since it debuted in 2016. But viewership increased nearly as much for the network's eight-game "NBA Sunday Showcase" slate, which averaged 2.56 million -- up 20% and the highest since 2022-23 (2.85M).

While all ratings milestones come with a grain of salt these days, college basketball would seem to have real momentum heading into March Madness.

Men's college basketball games averaged 433,000 viewers on Nielsen-rated television during the 2025-26 season, up 19% from last year. That increase is beyond the range that would be explained by Nielsen's methodological changes of the past year, specifically the expansion of its out-of-home viewing sample and shift to a new currency that combines "Big Data" from smart TVs and set-top boxes with its traditional panel.

College basketball's championship week featured no shortage of viewership highs, albeit with a few caveats here and there.

Sunday's NCAA men's basketball tournament selection show averaged 6.41 million viewers on CBS, up 12% from last year (5.71M) and the highest average for the telecast since 2014. Viewership peaked at 7.1 million, up 15% from last year's peak of 6.16 million.

Those increases are generally beyond the range that can be attributed solely to Nielsen's methodological changes of the past year (specifically the expansion of its out-of-home viewing sample and shift to a new methodology that combines "Big Data" from smart TVs and set-top boxes with its traditional panel).
